The second day is longer and more demanding but feels no harder due to the fact you are becoming more confident on your bike and the forest trails and mountain passes are becoming less daunting. Today's ride is quite simply mind-blowing as we wind our way on and off road all the way over the mountain. Day 5: Sarahan - Sangla 122kms: 8 hours
Today we travel through a beautiful and remote region called the Bapsa valley following the immense Sutlej River towards our nights stop at Sangla - altitude 2700 metres. Tonight we camp, the pitch will be very well set up and mattresses are supplied. Food and showers are also set up. Use your sleeping bag for extra comfort. Day 6: Sangla - Kalpa 90kms: 6 hours
Today we can pace ourselves a little and take a more restful ride as the time on the bikes is relatively short. We ride right up to Chitkul which at 3450 metres is slap bang on the Tibet border. If we get any closer to the border the Chinese will shoot us on sight. That's official. There is a shoot on sight order in place and we'll ride right up to the boundary. After time spent waving and swapping pleasantries with the Chinese occupying forces (!) we'll move on to our nights destination at Kalpa - altitude 2900 metres. The hotel we stop at has a stunning view of the Kinnaur Kailash peak rising up above us to a mighty 6050m. Day 7: Kalpa - Tabo 180kms: 8-9 hours
Today sees us and our bikes thoroughly searched by guards at a military camp that we pass. Your previously supplied permits, received during our warm up day in Shimla, will be checked and then we will pass on towards the remote village of Gue - where we can go and see an ancient 400 year old mummified body. Tonight we stay in the Tabo monastery itself; this is a very special moment as it's a highly revered place - Tabo is the most important monastery after the mighty Tholing monastery in Tibet. Day 8: Tabo - Rangrik 150kms: 9 hours
Another amazing day's riding takes us past some incredible mountain scenery towards Rangrik. Day 9: Rangrik - Keylong 200kms: 9 hours
Today is long and quite tough. We're heading over the infamous Kunzum-la pass at a truly massive 4500 metres, which is right on the border of the 2 regions of Lahaul and Spiti. There is a highly respected temple on this pass and if we're on target for time we'll visit it. A 20 minute trek from the motorable pass and we can take in a wonderful sight, the high altitude lake of Chandratal. We spend tonight at Keylong at 3305 metres.
